So to fill the remaining slots they can pick another kid who has an appointment from any district and it doesn't go against that MOC's allotment.

I assume that is the national pool that's being referred to. The National pool is comprised of those students that did not get an appointment off their MOC slate or other nom source but do have a nom - perhaps it is a Presidential nom child of military - any qualified child of military, within the rules, can get the nom but only limited appointments allowed via that nom.

If a student has an LOA and no nom then there is no guarantee of appointment. However, typically a MOC looks favorably on LOAs and grants them a nom, though not all - some MOCs will not allow an LOA to be in the decision process I have heard of students with an LOA that either did not understand the process or for some other reason failed to apply or complete their MOC applications.

That translated to no nomination. In highly competitive areas, if a MOC is of the opinion that the LOA is not something that the committee should use the decision, the student will want to be sure to do well on the nom side.

In our area the LOA is kept from the committees knowledge - the thought being that if the candidate is good enough to qualify for an LOA, they should be good enough to shine through on the nomination process too and typically that is the case.

The SAs can grant a supe nom - but if the candidate did not do their homework and try to get the MOC nom the SA looks less favorably and may not grant the Supe nom.

There are other reasons that a SA may decide not to grant a supe nom to an LOA recipient as well. Let's assume the MOC places ten candidates on one slate, including the LOAs but does not select a principal nominee In that scenario the SA is obligated to select the candidate to get the appointment based on the highest WCS of all ten names on that slate.

If the LOA is the highest WCS, then the LOA is charged to the MOC and potentially no other candidates get appointed off that slate.

If the LOA is either not the largest WCS or the MOC has nominated a principal that is not the LOA then the principal or largest WCS will be appointed and charged to the MOC and the LOA will be appointed and granted a supe or other nom, maybe the VP.

If the LOA is not on the slate meaning the MOC did not give a nom the SA is not obligated to give that candidate a nom.

The key here is that while an LOA is a very good thing, it is not an appointment. To get the appointment the student must get a nom and must any other stipulations set forth within the LOA.

I am aware of LOA recipients that have not gotten an appointment, though it is rare. Phil Murphy signed an executive order in November imposing new coronavirus rules on public and private employers.

The order mandates that all businesses, nonprofits, educational entities, and governments adhere to certain safety protocols related to COVID, such as mandating face coverings, physical distancing, and sanitization protocols.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has declared March 14 an annual day of remembrance in New York City for coronavirus victims.

Joined Mar 10, Messages Hello I have a quick question; does your BGO contact you for the interview, or do you have to email them first?

Thank you. Joined Jan 26, Messages They should eventually contact you, but if you haven't emailed to introduce yourself yet you could also ask about the interview in that email.

I'd suggest asking just to get ahead of things and show initiative. Joined Jul 15, Messages 2, It probably is a good idea to complete a good portion of your application before trying to schedule an interview.

Most BGOs like to see that a candidate has taken some initiative interviewing a candidate who has not demonstrated their seriousness is a waste of both parties' time.

Joined Jun 9, Messages 6, Agree with ' I'm always amazed at candidates who have completed zero percent of their package and yet are fixated on getting their BGO interview scheduled.

If only they paid as much attention to the other 9 items. To be a bit more serious. He was glad to see us parents there because he wanted to see the parental support.

She was nervous about the demeanor of her BGO but he turned out to be a wise and very nice man. We dug up what we could and he collected it for his file.

I did not receive instructions on how to dress, but I wore a grey suit, white shirt, and blue tie. I dressed up for two reasons.

Number one, I wanted to look professional, show my BGO that I was taking applying to USNA very seriously, and so I felt more confident.

Number two, my interview was in the downtown office of a major company and not being in a suit would have looked out of place.

My BGO was actually dressed more casually since it was Friday, but I'm still glad I wore the suit. My interview covered pretty typical topics: why I want to go to USNA, info about my family and if they supported me, Plebe Summer, Honor Code, Academy academics, my academics, sports, etc.

It wasn't bad at all. My BGO was a former wrestler so we talked alot about that and then we got down to the normal questions and stuff. He just asked me a few questions and then gave me some advice for my other interviews.

Definitely was pretty laid back about the whole thing. Thanks for all the advice. How have candidates BGO's handled second interviews for those who are trying for the second time?

She has very little access to phones and e-mail, so I called the BGO I met him last year and asked if we could set up a phone interview.

An interview is not supposed to be a casual experience. The interviewer will want you to be comfortable, but you should be respectful and remain professional at all times.

It is important to be calm and relaxed! That will come with confidence. Confidence can come with doing practice interviews. Interview with a teacher, and if possible ask your parents if there is someone you don't personally know and can practice interviewing with.

That practice will give you confidence and learn how to respond to questions as well as talking about yourself. There will be the NOM interviews to be prepared for as well!

So for the BGO interview, ask any questions you may have about the application process, life at the Academy, and what your future career may look like.

Also find out what your best plans B,C and D should be. Finally describe yourself, your current accomplishments, goals, and why you want to serve.

While you should be somewhat braggadocios, it is important to be humble at the same time. Be yourself the prepared self!

Best of luck to you! Old Navy BGO 5-Year Member. Joined Jan 5, Messages 2, The best advice is the sticky at the top of the page -- written by a BGO with lots of experience!

Some good advice here, but the caveat to "Be Yourself" is to be a confident, professional self. Poise and confidence are traits that I look for and comment on in my write up, and that is not something you can "practice " leading up to the interview, it's something that is developed over time.

Don't try to put on an act and be someone you aren't -- trust me, it's easy to tell. The truth is, no one really knows for sure --but probably alot less weight than many think it does.

BGO's are not "screeners" with a mission to keep candidates out.. We want to see good candidates succeed. I know it is difficult and perhaps scary for a candidate to come meet with me, a complete stranger, usually at my office with a large for the area law firm.

We have a handful of mandatory , perhaps scripted issues to cover, but as USNA points out, we really don't know alot about the candidates coming in, so its really getting to know you, what motivates you, and why you want to attend USNA more than anything else.

As an aside and caution to up and coming candidates and as an exception to the statement that we don't know much about you , one of the things I do do now is Google candidates.

Most of the time all I see is newspaper articles with achievements, sports, etc. Some people like to bare their soul on Social Media, but some advice to all young people --never post anything publicly that you don't want a potential employer to see someday.
